When we moved to Chestermere in 1991 it was a summer village with 900 residents. We now have over 10,000 residents, more parks, and more businesses. In 2006 Chestermere was Canada's fastest growing town.
We are only on 5 miles from the Calgary city limit and about a 30 minute drive to downtown Calgary, and 15 mintues to the 'Calgary International Airport.
The lake is 750 acres that you can boat, fish, swim and play on. Many housing options are available as new subdivisions are developed. If you are having trouble understanding the different areas in Chestermere let us be your guide. All of the community links will lead you to a page with more information and mls listings for that area.
Westmere is on the North-West end of Chestermere Lake and runs west
towards Calgary along the 1A highway.
Westmere has the most diverse housing mix in
Chestermere. Townhouses, villas, 3 storey apartment buildings, estate homes and
a good mix of single family homes. Construction started here in 2000 and it will
be many years before the area is completely built out. There is a show home
parade open now.
There are some very lovely park areas in this
sub-division, the linier parks provide areas for families to walk, and play and
also walkout lots backing onto green space. There is a large water feature at
the entrance to Westmere. Westmere has the two elementary schools and the
separate school goes from kindergarten to Grade 12.
Westmere is also home to Chestermere Station, the
largest commercial property in Chestermere. There is a Safeway Store, 2 banks, a
dentist, optometrist, chiropractor, Dominos Pizza, Tim Horton's, Pet Store, The
Source, Dry Cleaners, a bottle depot and car detailing business. More businesses
will be opening in the near future.,
John Peake Memorial Park is on this side of the lake,
providing easy access for residents. The public boat launch is here as well as a
new boardwalk and grassy area for the public to enjoy. The skateboard park is
just across the highway and is now easy to get to with the traffic lights
installed. The community centre is also just across the street from Westmere.
Lakeside Greens Golf Course
This was the development that really kick-started
Chestermere. Before the golf course was here the only water available was well
water that was less than wonderful. When the golf course was approved they
brought out the water line from Calgary. When this happened property values went
up about 40%. At this point all of the homes in Chestermere were required to
connect to the city water lines.
Lakeside Greens opened the first showhome parade in
1991. The last homes built were built in 1998. Many homes in Lakeside Greens
back onto beautiful ponds, there are many homes with spectacular mountain views.
There is one small villa project in the area with the remainder of homes being
single family. There is a good selection of bungalow and two storey homes, with
or without walkout basements. The clubhouse offers good food, and a health club.
The course is 18 holes and is semi-private.
West Creek
This Development was first selling homes in 1991 and the
single family home builders were Crossley Custom Homes, Jager Homes, Stepper
Custom Homes, Douglas Homes, Henry DeKort and Trico Homes. Sterling and Today's
homes have built some duplex units in this area. This development was winding
down in 2006.
The area has a 9 acre lake that has a walking path
around it. Families can also skate. It is not suitable for swimming. There are
also small canals that run throughout this community. Thus the name Westcreek.
West Creek has a small shopping strip with a pub, a
doctor, a Chinese restaurant, a Vietnamese Noodle house, a driving school, a Tae
Kwon Do school, a dance school, a real estate office, a flooring company, a
convenience store, a pizza delivery service, a liquor store, a gas station, a
car wash, a Curves franchise and a wake board/skateboard shop.
The Cove
The Cove is located on the North-East side of
Chestermere Lake. It features 40 lakefront homes with the balance of the homes
being off of the lake. The first homes in this area were built on Cove Road and
were started in the late 1990's. Lakefront lots in this area were 60 feet wide
by about 200 feet deep. The Cove is the only area in Chestermere has a private
beach area for residents only. The Cove has a still has few homes left that are
in various stages of construction. There are walk-out lots, with a variety of
bungalow and 2 storey plans. The different phases had different builders, but
most sales were done through designated builders and a showhome parade. There
are homes that back onto green space, large pie lots, zero lot lines, and canal
lots. There are no rear lanes in The Cove. Builders in the Cove were Crossley,
Coco, Assured, Morrison, Douglas, Talisman, Godwin and Keystone.
The Beaches.
Homes in this area were built starting in 1993 as in
Chesterview Estates people could by the lot and bring their own builder. Other
phases were not added that quickly. More were built in 1997, but it took off in
1999. Towards the end of the development builders built showhomes and you could
only build with selected builders for that area. Fortunately they were solid
builders that built great homes. They were Stepper Homes, Sterling Homes and
Nu-Vista Homes.
Chesterview Estates
One of the first developments in Chestermere, this area
was started by George Trutina who is now the developer for Rainbow Falls. This
project started about the same time as Phase 1 of the golf course but was
finished much sooner. At that time the town demanded that minimum lot frontage
be 60'. This is why we think this is such a great area. The first homes in this
area were built between 1994 and 1997 a few still built in 1999. George Trutina
had Truman homes at that time, we are always delighted to find a home that he
built. He put quality at a good price in his homes. Douglas Homes joined Truman
as the largest builders in the area. Many homes here were built by smaller
builders or contracted privately by the home owner.
Lakeview Landing
Lakeview Landing was developed by United management. The
first homes were built here in 1999. Construction wound down in 2005. This
development had a show home parade that started on Lakeview Passage. Builders in
this development were Shane Homes, Morrison Homes, Trico Homes, Douglas Homes
and Lifestyle Homes. There is a good variety of bungalow and two storey homes.
There are also some duplex homes and some homes that are just attached at the
garage. Most homes have attached garages, but on Lakeview Inlet you will find a
few homes that do not have attached garages and have a rear lane for a detached
garage. There are some nice playgrounds in the development. There are bike and
walking paths through out this development. Chestermere Middle School is located
in this area.
Lakefront
There are not enough lakefront homes in Chestermere! We
have more people wanting a home than homes that are available. Having lived on
the lake for 16 years we know what lakefront living is all about. We love our
lake and our lake community. Which side is best? All we can say is that everyone
you talk to will tell you that their location is the best on the lake. The
people on the West side say that their lots are deeper. The owners on the East
side will make the claim that they have the mountain view and the sunsets. Cove
homeowner's can boast that they live in an architecturally controlled
neighbourhood. We say that anyone lucky enough to be on the lake is lucky
enough!
Certainly, different areas of the lake have different
advantages over others, but not everyone needs or wants the same thing. As
Chestermere Lake was once a natural lake that had a dam built on the South end
of the lake. This was done around just before the 1900's. At this time some
natural sand had been built up over time and there was also some good
agricultural land that was flooded.
Therefore we have some areas of the lake that have a
sandy lakebed, some that have gumbo. Some areas of the lake have deeper water
and shorter docks. Some areas have shallower water and longer docks. Some areas
have been dredged as part of a test dredge that was carried out in the late
1990's.
East Chestermere
The properties along East Chestermere Drive have
developed over time with smaller developments stretched over a period of the
past 18 years. There is not a great deal of property that was included in the
town at this time. The first homes developed were towards the South-East end of
the lake off of the lake. They have turned out to be very beautiful homes on
some very desirable property. Most of these parcels were split up into ½ to 1/3
acre lots. As the land slopes down towards the lake most of the properties along
East Chestermere Drive have a good view of the lake. The other streets that has
the ½ acre parcels is East Lakeview Road and Lakeview Rise. Many of these
building sites were released in 1994.
East Lakeview Estates runs between East Chestermere
Drive and the Trans Canada Highway. Construction began here in 2005. The
shortage of available homes really helped kick this project off. There was no
showhome parade here, and lot buyers could choose their own builder. Many small
builders bought land and built spec. homes to sell here.
There are new homes for sale here now, with builders
having show homes. Drive out and have a look!
